This week I was searching google for kids that help the environment. I ended up finding a lot of groups and people that are trying to help the environment! Just like my friends and me.

My friends and I are trying to get people to use reuseable bags rather than plastic. Plastic bags create pollution and they also kill animals. Plastic bags fly around and land in random places. So maybe YOU can help us get rid of placstic bags!

Here's what some other kids are doing!
Ben Workinger - age 8: Monarch Butterfly Safe Haven
Ben was reading a article about decreasing numbers of migrating Monarch butterflies, he got interested in helping them. Monarch butterflies are vulnerable to extreme weather changes. Ben's school turned their garden in a habitat for Monarch butterflies. Colin Carlson - age 11: The Cool Coventry Club
Colin noticed climate change firsthand on a trip to Galapogas Islands, Colin got concerned about the climate. After viewing Al Gore's Inconvenient Truth, Colin decided to "think globally and act locally." Then he made the Cool Conventry Club(CCC). The Word: Keenan Collins-BIG Trees

Hi I am Keenan! I was born in Portland and moved to Hood River when I was 3 months old. I have travelled around the U.S. with my dad or mom.

One thing I noticed when I travelled away from the west coast is the trees are so much shorter than we see in Oregon! At first I thought the weather here was better for tree growth. Then I found out that ALL the old growth trees in the U.S. are in CA, WA, or OR! ALL the others except a few (literally!) have been cut down.

I am proud to call Hood River home. We have it all, lots of rivers and nearby lakes, mountains, and BIG trees. It is a great environment to live in and I want to do my part to keep it great.

The Word: Juliyen - Something Drastic

Hi my name is Juliyen.

Earlier this year my Dad and I discovered how bad disposible plastic bags can be on our environment and specifically our oceans.

Doing something drastic. Cutting the plastic. With the help of my friend Keenan and others we are now working with local towns in Oregon and Washington to voluntarily stop using plastic bags and instead use reuseable bags, backpacks or very large pockets.

If kids in every community worked to voluntarily stop the use of disposible plastic bags, we would save the environment and ocean from millions of plastic bags!
